Nel cuore del continente nord-americano una cornice di monti ha fatto da tempi geologici da sbarramento alle sabbie che le tempeste di vento trasportano sull'altopiano del Colorado.
Per un'insolita combinazione geomorfologica e morfoclimatica si è formato così un grande campo dunare, il "Great Sand Dunes" oggi Parco Nazionale, circa 300 km a sud di Denver.

 Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is a USA National Park located in the Sant Luis Valley, Colorado, Originally created as Great Sand Dunes National Monument on March 17, 1932, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve was established by an act of the USA Congress on September 13, 2004.The park includes 44,246 acres (17,906 ha) and the preserve protects an additional 41,686 acres (16,870 ha).
